1.) Taking Practice Time for Granted
All of the professors at college told me that when I got out of school, I would have even less time than I did in college to be able to do things such as practice. Well it turns out that they had to have a little bit of life experience to land that job, because they are 100% correct. I desperately wish that I had spent more time in the practice room then because it is treasured time now.
2.) Taking My Studies More Seriously
Along the same lines of number one (there may or may not be a theme developing here), I wish that I had taken my studies more seriously while I was in school. On the whole, the information that they try to teach you turns out to be pretty useful in the real world. I wouldn’t consider myself a bad student by any stretch, but there are definitely classes and assignments that I could have tried harder on. Kids take your education seriously!
3.) Performing More
Man do I wish that I had performed more! And I am not just talking “classical music” either. I wish I had put myself out there more as a performer and played more gigs of all sorts. It is one of the ways that you make it out here in the real world, and I wish I had done it more. Plus it is fun!
4.) Listening More
There is so much great music out there. Let me repeat it for those of you in the back: THERE IS SO MUCH GREAT MUSIC OUT THERE! I wish I have heard more music than I have. Luckily there is a remedy to this one, and I am actively pursuing a much more healthy relationship with listening to all the great music in the world.
5.) Listening Deeper
So while there is a ton of great music in the world, one thing that we do all the time is put great art on as background music. Music is in a very real way the soundtrack of our lives. I wish that I would have put a much more concentrated effort into actively listening to music instead of just letting it play while I do other things. Again, I am working on it.
6.) More Ear Training
For the longest time ear training was the bane of my existence. I hated it. I hated it with a burning passion! However, as time passes the more I realize that is a necessity. I wish that I would have spent more time focusing on ear training when I was in school because I use the skill daily now.
Well, there you have it. Six musical regrets that I have. What are some musical or artistic regrets that you have? Are there any that you are working to remedy like I am working to remedy most of my listening ones? Let me know in the comments below! I would love to hear your thoughts! Thank you for reading, and I will see you next week!
